Chapter 14 Light and Vibrations is not very difficult. It is basically of continued from what you learned in Chapter 19 blue book. You have a packet from the quest web site. You also have to do a lab using a light bulb, light sensor and logger pro 3.6. Partner one does the lab on Light, Brightness and Distance. You will most likely have to set the light sensor to 6000 lux instead of 600 lux to show a better difference in the intensity of light. Good luck!

Chapter 14 is an easy chapter. It is very similar to the Blue Book's chapter 19. It uses the same basic formulas. The only problem I had was on the labs. I suggest doing them fairly early. The packet says to set the light sensor on 600, but it will only work out right if you set it to 6000. In the end it is not very difficult.

The only problem you may face in chapter 14 is manipulating formulas. Make sure you are very careful when doing this! Also make sure you are careful with putting negative signs on the correct numbers, especially with convex mirrors. The equations on the bottom of page 531, the yellow box on page 532, and the yellow box on page 533 are the ones you will use on the book work. Looking at the sample problems that are worked out in the book also helps. The blue box on page 533 and the entire page 538 are helpful as well. The yellow box on page 522 helps with answering questions on frequency. The lab polarization of light was not difficult, but be sure that you hold the lenses at the correct angle and keep them from slipping or it will make your results inconsistent. You may have to get Mrs. Duncan to help you in the last part of the lab when you have to add a line to your graph. Good Luck!!!!

On the book work of chapter 14 be sure to change the numbers to negative if it is behind the mirror. I made a lot of careless mistakes by just not putting the negative. There is a blue box in chapter 14 of your physics book to tell you how to describe the image. The image will be smaller if the number is less than positive 1. Wavelength and frequency will use the same equation on every problem, just change it around. On the lab set the light sensor to 6000 instead of 600. Also, use the button with the big A to auto scale. This makes the graph larger so all the points on the graph can be seen.

Chapter 14 is a bitter sweet chapter that, though can be easily done, requires the person working through it to be meticulous. All formulas required for this section are in the blue book. Some rearranging may be essential in getting to your answer. You do also have a lab so leave about two or three days to do that.

Ch 14 Light & Vibrations is a very easy packet!! The formula needed for problems concerning wave speed is on page 522. For "reflection" problems, refer back to the blue book! The formulas needed are located in Ch. 19. Some formulas will need to be rearranged to find what you are looking for. Some of the formulas are:
magnification M=-(di/do)
object height ho/hi=do/di
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
DO NOT FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR NUMBERS TO NEGATIVES IF THE IMAGE IS BEHIND THE MIRROR!! To describe the image refer to the chart on page 533 in your book. To determine if the image is larger or smaller, compare the magnification to the image distance.
